Vibrant
cities are a special passion of mine. In fact, for me they act as
a valued counterbalance to the serenity and tranquility of country and
mountain scenes - just as I love visiting world metropolitan cities such
as New York, Paris, and Vienna only to return happily to the quieter, if
by no means pastoral, Cincinnati.
New York City has a special place in my heart. I was deeply
saddened by the loss of life and destruction on September 11. At
the same time I was deeply moved by the resilience shown by helpers at
places such as the historic Trinity Church, which was miraculously
preserved. I had painted it previously against the background of
the Twin Towers in a painting called "Manhattan
Spirituality". (This painting is now part of the permanent
collection of the University of Cincinnati.) A painting in tribute
of 9/11, "The Big Tear", was part of a special exhibit at the
Pendleton Art Center, Cincinnati, showing the crying Statue of
Liberty. (Click here for

In my expressionistic rendering of
city scenes I depict both the excitement and cultural richness of city
life, and at other times themes such as the social and economic
disparities and loneliness of their inhabitants.
